As a professional educator, I have over 15 years of experience teaching violin in a variety of settings. ranging from private studio instruction, to elementary and middle school group classes, to undergraduate music majors at UC San Diego. My teaching philosophy foregrounds student-centered learning and exploration, while fostering the development of fundamental skills, such as independent critical thinking, creativity, time management, professionalism and body awareness.
I hold a D.M.A. in Contemporary Performance (Violin) from UC San Diego (2024), alongside a Graduate Performer’s Certificate from Northern Illinois University (2011) and a Master of Music in Violin Performance from the University of Ottawa (2008). Additionally, I have a Diploma in Chamber Music (2005) and an Honors Bachelor’s Degree in Violin Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University (2004). In 2012, I completed Suzuki Violin Pedagogy Training, including Unit 1 (Book 3), Unit 2 (Book 2), Unit 3 (Book 1), and the "Every Child Can" course. This comprehensive training equips me to teach a range of levels ranging from beginner to advanced.
As a private instructor, I maintained a violin studio of 30-40 students at the Merriam School of Music, Mississauga, ON, Canada from 2011-2018, where I served as the String Department Specialist. I have coached strings at Port Credit High School, Mississauga, ON, Canada (2013-2018), leading monthly sectionals, and provided individual and group instruction as a Dutton String Fellowship recipient at Sycamore Middle & High Schools, Sycamore, IL, U.S.A (2010-2011), where I also led weekly sectionals. Additionally, I have taught private undergraduate violin lessons at the University of California, San Diego (2018-2020) as part of the Instrumental Instruction Mus 32 course, guiding a small studio of undergraduate music majors and minors. Since 2008, I have maintained a private studio of students (ages 5-65) via in-person and digital means, teaching students from beginner to advanced levels.
My love for experimentation and contemporary music has led me to design and conduct workshops geared towards sharing my knowledge of contemporary violin techniques, tape loops, graphic notation and audiovisual performance practices with interested community members, undergraduate performance majors and emerging composers.
